Introducing Ada 95

Although Ada was originally designed to provide a single flexible yet portable language for real-time embedded systems to meet the needs of the US DoD, its domain of application has expanded to include many other areas, such as large-scale information systems, distributed systems, scientific computation, and systems programming.

Furthermore, its user base has expanded to include all major defense agencies of the Western world, the whole of the aerospace community and increasingly many areas in civil and private sectors such as telecommunications, process control and monitoring systems. Indeed, the expansion in the civil sector is such that civil applications now generate the dominant revenues of many vendors.

Ada 95 Language Reference Manual

Ada was originally designed with three overriding concerns: program reliability and maintenance, programming as a human activity, and efficiency.

This revision to the language was designed to provide greater flexibility and extensibility, additional control over storage management and synchronization, and standardized packages oriented toward supporting important application areas, while at the same time retaining the original emphasis on reliability, maintainability, and efficiency.

Ada Distilled Book

This book is for experienced programmers new to Ada. Heavily commented example programs help experienced programmer experiment with Ada. This is not a comprehensive book on the entire Ada language.

In particular, we say very little about Ada.Finalization, Storage Pool Management, Representation Specifications, Concurrency, and other more advanced topics. Other books, listed in the bibliography, cover advanced topics. This book is an entry point to your study of Ada.

Ada 95 : The Craft of Object Oriented Programming

In this book you’re going to learn how to write programs in Ada, a general purpose programming language originally commissioned by the US Department of Defense.

The first standard for the Ada language was finalised in 1983 and was later revised to produce a new updated standard in 1995. The earlier version is now known as Ada 83 and the later version (the one covered in this book) as Ada 95.
Ada programs use a somewhat stilted kind of formal English in order to specify the operations you want the computer to perform. You provide some declarations which specify the objects that the program is going to deal with. You also provide a sequence of statements specifying the actions you want performed on those objects and the computer will perform them in order, one after the other.
A set of declarations together with a sequence of statements like this makes up a procedure which you invent a name for. For example, you might write a procedure which clears the screen and call it Clear_Screen.

Ada for Software Engineers

The book is intended for software engineers making the transition to Ada, and for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students (including those who have had the good fortune to study Ada as their first programming language!).

No specific Ada knowledge is assumed; the prerequisites are a basic knowledge of computer science and computer systems, and significant programming experience (not necessarily in Ada). As the title implies, this book is for you if you are a software engineer or training to become one.
